Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S)

A Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor (LPC-S) is an LPC licensed in Mississippi who has the required experience, training in supervision, membership in a professional association, and is approved by the Board to provide supervision.

Supervisors monitor the performance of an individual that is under contract with them by providing regular, documented face-to-face consultation, guidance, and instruction with respect to the clinical skills and competencies of the supervised individual. (see Rules 4.1.E and Rule 4.4). Supervisors document performance online through the MS LPC website for the Supervisee as they pursue licensure.

  • Update your contact information
  • Change your Profile picture
  • Review license status
  • Order replacement certificates when damaged, lost, or name changed If you need a replacement certificate due to name change or damaged or lost certificate, you may request replacement of your MS Professional Counselor License through the Online Payment tab in your profile. There is a $30 fee for replacement wall certificate.
  • Order verification of license to be sent to other entities If you are a MS P-LPC or LPC or have been in the past, you may request verification of your MS Professional Counselor License through the Online Payment tab in your profile. There is a $25 fee for the verification to be sent to another state licensing Board.
  • Request License File Transfer to Other Jurisdiction

  • Check CEH and Submit CEH

2. Renew License

LPC and LPC-S are renewed every two years (biennially). License renewal reminders are emailed in May of your renewal year. Please be aware, however, that failure to receive this notification does not relinquish your responsibility for timely renewal.

Renewal Application, any supporting documents, and payment must be received to the LPC Board office PRIOR to June 30th of your renewal year to remain Active Status and to avoid reapplication fees. This is an online process. You are required to submit the online Renewal no later than midnight on the date the license is scheduled to expire.

Renewal will be processed when Renewal Application, Continuing Education Hours, certificate of completion of the no fail Mississippi Jurisprudence examination, and renewal fee are received; however, if a background check is required, the Renewal is contingent upon the receipt of a clear background check by September 30, of your renewal year. If not received by that date, license status will revert to Lapsed, and you will not be licensed to practice in Mississippi.

Licensed Professional Counselor –  Supervisors (LPC-S) will complete the Mississippi LPC-S Jurisprudence exam and will also need to complete the Supervisee Update Form for each Supervisee before renewal status will be updated.

 Steps to Successful Renewal

  1. Login to your Profile.
  2. Upload a current passport style photo that is a head shot with a clear image of your face with a white background. The photo should be composed of only your shoulders and head, should be high resolution and should be in focus.
  3. Review and update your contact information on the General Registration tab in your Profile.
  4. Submit the required CE hours by clicking the CEH Reporting Tab in your Profile.
  5. The no fail Mississippi Jurisprudence exam will be available from CCE Academy at academy.cce-global.org You will need to choose the LPC examination unless you are an LPC-S, then select the LPC-S examination. LPC will receive three (3) hours of ethics for your Mississippi renewal. LPC-S will receive two (2) hours of ethics and one (1) hour of supervision for your Mississippi renewal. Submit the certificate of completion of the Mississippi Jurisprudence exam by clicking the CEH Reporting Tab in your Profile and selecting the Jurisprudence Exam for “activity type.” The appropriate number of ethics and supervision contact hours will be calculated. The “no fail” Mississippi Jurisprudence exam is designed with a pool of questions in which you must answer a minimum of thirty (thirty-five if you are an LPC-S) correctly. You cannot fail this exam. You will keep getting questions until you get the designated number correct.Steps to Access and Complete the Mississippi Jurisprudence

    Step 1. Go to academy.cce-global.org
    Step 2. Click on Register
    Step 3. Once registered, click on Jurisprudence, select Mississippi in the drop down.
    Step 4. Select either the LPC or LPC-S
    Step 5. Go to Cart and purchase your assessment
    Step 6. Go back to Mississippi Jurisprudence to begin your assessment
    Step 7. Once you complete the assessment, your certificate will be emailed to you. It will also be stored in your Account.

    6. Complete Renewal Application by clicking the RENEW LICENSE button

If you are an LPC, AFTER you have entered and met the CEH requirements and uploaded your certificate of completion of the Mississippi Jurisprudence exam (LPC or LPC-S, accordingly) and photo, the Renew License button will appear. When you click the Renew License button, you will be taken to the Renewal Application. The LPC Renewal Application includes additional profile questions along with Personal and Licensure History questions.

If you are an LPC-S, you are required to complete a Status Update on Supervisees seen since the last renewal as a requirement of renewal before the Renew License button will appear.

7. Complete Background Check (if applicable)

The Board requires a fingerprint background check to be performed on all licensees every six years.  If an updated fingerprint background check is required, you will be prompted to order a fingerprint card from the Board office to be completed and mailed according to the posted instructions.  Renewal will be processed when all other steps are complete; however, if your background check is not received in the Board office by September 30 of your renewal year, your license status will revert to Lapsed, and you will not be licensed to practice in Mississippi.

8. Remit Renewal Fee(s)

Renewal payment can be made by credit card, electronic check, or mailing a check or money order to the Board office. Please note:

  • If you choose to mail in check or money order, it must be received by the renewal deadline, to avoid $100 reapplication fee.
  • If you use the online payment there will be a nominal fee. Click Continue to be taken to the shopping cart. Check the licensee renewal amount and then click Next to continue to the online payment system. Online renewal payment must be processed by the renewal deadline to avoid a $100 reapplication fee.

9. Renewal Receipt

Your renewal will be reviewed by Board staff for completeness and compliance with renewal requirements. The Renewal Certificate and Wallet Card will not be mailed unless you request one through the online payment tab of your profile. You may print the Renewal Certificate and Wallet Card from your profile. Your License status will display ACTIVE.

3. Order Verification of MS Professional Counselor License

The Board provides the service of verification of your license to other entities for a fee. You must submit payment before the Board will provide this verification that will include your Licensure status, Date of original license, and acknowledgement of any disciplinary action by the Board.  To order your license verification, Login to your profile and go to the Online Payments tab. 

4. Request MS Professional Counselor License File Transfer to Other Jurisdiction

The Board provides the service of transfer of your license file to other licensing boards for a fee. You must submit payment before the Board will provide this service that will include a copy of your license file (to include transcript(s), examination score report(s), and supervised experience verification form(s), along with a verification of your Licensure status, Date of original license, and acknowledgement of any disciplinary action by the Board. To order your File Transfer, Login to your profile and go to the Online Payments tab.

5. Continuing Education

Reported hours must have been obtained in the two-year time period since your last renewal date.

Requirements

For LPC renewal:

  • 24 total Continuing Education Hours (CEH) hours are required, including,
  • 6 CEH in professional ethics or legal issues in the delivery of counseling services

For LPC-S renewal, above requirements, plus

  • 1 CEH in supervision per year; a minimum of 2 hours per renewal period.
  • LPC-S renewal coincides with LPC renewal.

LPCs may review their current totals of continuing education hours and can update their file by logging in to their Profile and selecting the CEH Reporting tab, then select the View/Update Current CE Hrs. Follow the instructions provided when selecting this tab to upload certificates.

Supervision Training

- Application Requirements

An individual wanting to become a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), must meet the following requirements:

Pre-application Requirements:
1.   Maintained ACTIVE Status LPC in Mississippi
2.   Provided mental health counseling for at least five (5) years, with at least two (2) years as an LPC
3.   Completed 45 hours of Supervision training (Graduate Level Academic Training, Professional Training referenced in Rule 4.4, or hold an Approved Supervisor credential from NBCC)*.
4.   Documented membership in a professional counseling organization
5.   Received no disciplinary sanctions against his or her LPC.

*In order to become certified as a Mississippi LPC-S, an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) must apply to the Mississippi Board. Provide a copy of your ACS Certificate when completing this application.

Licensed Supervisor Application Requirements:
1.    Submit a current resume/Vitae on your online MS LPC Profile
2.    Submit a supervision contract that includes:

  • Policy when the LPC-S is out of the office or unavailable, including a back-up LPC-S to the P-LPC when you are out of office and the contact information
  • Informed Consent that discloses process of supervision:
    • Brief philosophy on supervision
    • Expectations of supervisee
    • Responsibilities of supervisee and supervisor
  • Terms of supervision (i.e. Supervision meetings should occur at a frequency based upon these ratios: one (1) supervision hour to forty (40) hours of services provided OR one (1) hour of supervision to twenty-five (25) hours of Direct Services. For persons working part-time, supervision should occur no less frequently than every other week.)
  • Fees
  • Signature and date block for both supervisee and supervisor
  • If LPC-S will be utilizing distance supervision sessions, the sessions must be provided by secure means of synchronous video conferencing only. Supervision by telephone, email, chat, or other forms of communication must be reserved to only emergency communications. The Supervision Contract submitted to the Board must include information explaining the use and limits of distance supervision, specify the qualifications of the LPC-S to provide distance supervision, and establish procedures for managing the failure of the video communication system.
  • Supervision Contract Sample  The Board has provided this sample which is a bulleted list of items needed in your LPC-S contract.

Licensed Supervisor Guidelines

1. Maintain monthly reporting of Supervisees logged hours.
2. Limit number of Supervisees to ten (10) individuals.
3. Complete an online Supervisory Agreement for the specific time and place of anticipated supervision for each Supervisee.
4. If you provide distance professional services for supervision, you must have completed 9 hours of Telemental Health training as referenced in Rule 7.5 or hold a Board Certified TeleMental Health credential provider from the Center for Credentialing and Education.
5. Maintain membership in a Professional organization.
6. Complete a minimum of one (1) hour of Supervision continuing education per year; a minimum of two (2) hours per renewal period.
7. LPC-S are not permitted to supervise a relative.
8.Complete yearly online evaluation of supervisees.
9. LPC-S are not permitted to supervise if they incur any disciplinary action by the Board.

  1. Verify that you have met the pre-application requirements:
    • Maintained ACTIVE Status LPC in Mississippi

  3. Go to the bottom right corner of the General Registration Tab
  4. Click on the New LPCS Application to begin
  5. Prepare the following documents to upload to the application: (Refer to Application Requirements for more detail.)

a.   Documentation Supervision training (Official transcript of 3 semester hour graduate supervision coursework, certificate of 45 hour contact hour professional training, or copy of ACS credential.)
b.   Current Resume/Vitae
c.   Organizational membership certificate(s)
d.   Supervisor Contract (Video Overview)

6. Pay the $50 Application for Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor fee

When you pay your fee, your application will be initially reviewed in the Board office for completeness.  If complete, the Board may consider your application at its next scheduled meeting.

- Supervision Training

Have documentation/verification of Supervision training (Course work or minimum of 45-hour workshop). Supervisors must have successfully completed either options a or b or c below.

a. Graduate-Level Academic Training. At least one graduate-level academic course in counseling supervision. The course must have included at least 45 clock hours
(equivalent to a three-credit hour semester course) of supervision training.

b. Professional Training. A Board approved professional training program in supervision. The training program must be a minimum of 45 clock hours with the trainers and meet presentation standards established by the Board (as Referenced in Rule 6.2).

7. Managing Supervisees

Visit the P-LPC page at https://www.lpc.ms.gov/license/p-lpc/ to view the steps for a P-LPC applicant. Supervisees/P-LPC applicants enter into a supervision agreement. To do so, they must:

  • Set up an Applicant Profile through the link provided at the bottom of the P-LPC  Instructions.
  • Secure a Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S).

  • Enter into a Supervisory Agreement with a Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S) by selecting the App Info tab and scrolling to Part III to complete the Post-Grad Supervisory Agreement. This online form uses electronic signatures between you and your supervisee/P-LPC to complete the agreement. The Supervisory Agreement will remain “pending” until you or the supervisee/P-LPC upload the Supervision Contract (Step #5) and the Declaration of Practice (Step #6) and the LPC-S concurs. 
  • Upload Supervision Contract to the Supervisory Agreement in App Info. Contract is obtained from LPC-S and signed by LPC-S and supervisee/P-LPC.
  • Upload Declaration of Practice* to the Supervisory Agreement in App Info. It must be reviewed and approved by LPC-S. Sample Declaration of Practices available here. (Video Overview
    *The Declaration of Practice is a document submitted to the Board by a P-LPC which indicates the qualifications of the P-LPC, the counseling process, expectations of the client and counselor, supervision requirements, and notes the competence of the P-LPC in providing services. A P-LPC must provide an updated Declaration of Practice document each time a site or supervisor changes.

Approving Supervised hours in the Supervision Reporting log:

Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisors (LPC-S) approve the reported supervised hours of their Supervisees monthly.  As part of the Supervision contract signed by the Supervisor and the Supervisee, the LPC-S reviews and approves supervision hours reported by the Supervisee on Reporting Logs accessed online through your Profile.

To complete the weekly Supervision Reporting Log for each of the applicants for which you supervise follow these steps:
1. Log into your Profile.
2. From the General Registration tab, select a Supervisee from your list to review.
3. Review the Supervisee’s Reports from Previous Weeks for accuracy, OR
4. Prepare the Weekly Supervision Reporting Log for your Supervisee.
5. Edit, delete or approve the entry.  Once approved by the LPC-S, the entry may be edited, but the reported hours cannot be deleted.

Steps for P-LPC to change site/setting or LPC-S to end supervision agreement/Prepare Form B:

  • LPC-S for that site must click on the “agreement complete” button, then enter the date agreement ended, reason for ending agreement, check box if supervisee will remain under supervision with that LPC-S or do not check the box if supervisee will not remain under supervision with that LPC-S, then click on the “Yes” button to continue with ending that agreement.
  • LPC-S will be taken to a screen to “update completed hours”. The completed hours must be entered into the box to match the supervision reporting logs, the LPC-S must click on the “update” button.
  • LPC-S is then taken to the Post-Master’s Supervision Verification, Form B, and must enter detailed description of practice supervised, check the appropriate button for recommendation/verification, click on the box to certify the information is true and complete, then click on “Save Form”. The “Save Form” submits the verification Form B electronically to the P-LPC’s online application.

8. Apply for Distance Professional Services Provider

Distance professional services involve the use of secure electronic communication in either asynchronous methods including email and social network systems or synchronous methods such as telephone, chat, and video systems, to provide counseling services to individuals, couples, families or group members. Distance Professional Services must be performed in accordance with the Rules and Regulations, the current American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics, the current National Board for Certified Counselors Policy Regarding the Provision of Distance Professional Services, and Mississippi and Federal law.

The Board requires that LPC and LPC-S licensees who offer distance professional counseling services or supervision hold the required credential or show proof of completion of professional training according to Rule 7.5.

Requirements:

  1. Be an Active Status LPC in Mississippi
  2. Hold a license in good standing in the state where the recipient receives services
  3. Hold the  Board Certified TeleMental Health (BC-TMH) credential or its equivalent as recognized by the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. (CCE) or the National Board of Certified Counselors OR completed professional training according to Rule 7.5. The professional training must be a minimum of nine (9) clock hours and must include the areas listed in Rule 7.5. Professional training can be gained by either: (1) Graduate-Level Academic Training (as documented on the syllabus) or (2) Continuing Education training course (as documented by certificate).
  4. Have Distance Credential OR certificate of completion of Professional Training on file with Board office by uploading a copy of the credential certificate OR training certificate to your profile at the bottom right side of the General Registration tab under Distance Professional Services.

9. Distance Supervision

Supervision hours can be provided by an LPC-S to Provisional-LPC if the following requirements are met:

1.    The LPC-S must comply with the Board’s Rule 7.5., which requires the LPC-S to obtain the Board Certified-Telemental Health (BC-TMH) credential or complete professional training as outlined.
2.    Distance supervision sessions must be provided by secure means of synchronous video conferencing only. Supervision by telephone, email, chat, or other forms of
communication must be reserved to only emergency communications.
3. The Supervision Contract submitted to the Board must include information explaining the use and limits of distance supervision, specify the qualifications of the LPC-S to provide distance supervision, and establish procedures for managing the failure of the video communication system.

10. Jurisprudence Examination

The no fail Mississippi Jurisprudence exam is available from CCE Academy at academy.cce-global.org  Select the LPC examination unless you are an LPC-S, then select the LPC-S examination. LPC will receive three (3) hours of ethics for Mississippi renewal. LPC-S will receive two (2) hours of ethics and one (1) hour of supervision for your Mississippi renewal.
